Sip of the Month: "Quarantini"

Sip of the Month: "Quarantini"

Now that bars, restaurants are temporarily closed and we are practicing social distancing, virtual happy hours are becoming a thing. Thanks to apps like FaceTime, Google Hangouts, and Zoom, seeing your friends face to face—while you are physically far away—has never been easier.

Start filling your calendar with chats, dig deep into that liquor cabinet, let your creativity soar and set up a virtual happy hour, coffee klatch or afternoon tea to reach out and socialize with your extended family, friends, neighbours, co-workers or someone in need.

Peruse your kitchen and drum up your very own quarantini recipe or follow the one below crafted by
Derek Brown, author of Spirits, Sugar, Water, Bitters: How the Cocktail Conquered the World and owner of the Washington, DC cocktail bar Columbia Room.

Send out a formal invitation, get out of your pj's and put on your "lippie"! It's party time!

P.S. We'd love to see your quarantini recipes, so please share with us over social media or email, tag us at #HCquarantini

Virtual Happy Hour
Quarantini
Serves 1

INGREDIENTS
1½ to 2 ounces of a not-necessarily-sweet base spirit, like vodka or gin — or another of your choice

¾ ounce of citrus (such as lemon or lime juice), whose vitamin C is great for immunity

½ to ¾ ounce of simple syrup to sweeten things up. (Simple syrup, as its name suggests, is simple to make. Just boil equal parts sugar and water until they liquefy together.)

*Best served chilled in front of a laptop or smartphone camera.

METHOD
Then shake the drink with a bit of ice — if you don’t have a shaker, you can grab two pint glasses and join their rims — before straining it into a cocktail glass.
